DISH Deepens Integration with Amazon Alexa with Voice Control and Fire TV Support

By Rachel Cericola

Slowly but surely, manufacturers are encouraging you to yell at your TV. You probably spent years doing it with no result. Then, TV makers started adding voice integration into some sets. Now DISH Network is delivering those same perks to anyone with a Hopper DVR and/or the Wally mobile receiver.

Starting today, subscribers can use Alexa voice integration to streamline almost any DISH experience. All you need is the Hopper (any generation) DVR and/or a Wally, as well as an Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, or Amazon Tap.

If you have all of those things, just sign into your Alexa account, enable the DISH skill, and follow the on-screen directions. Once it's all set, you can watch TV hands-free and find content a lot easier by asking things like, "Alexa, change channel to ESPN" or "Alexa, search for The Leftovers."

Besides flipping channels and finding shows, Alexa voice integration allows users to seek out certain genres and actors, as well as call out commands to play, pause, fast-forward, and rewind content. The new feature will work across DISH's live, recorded, and on-demand content, as well as Netflix.

Amazon is also putting a little DISH love into the Fire TV. Starting today, customers will be able to access the DISH Anywhere app on any Amazon Fire TV product. This means you'll be able to view live and recorded DISH content across the house or across town, without the need for another receiver.

DISH Anywhere provides Hopper customers access to all live and recorded TV content, as well as on-demand titles. All you need is web access and a smartphone, tablet, computer, or TV.

"While DISH Anywhere has historically been embraced on mobile devices, users are now getting even more of what they want -- their DISH subscription on any TV at no extra cost," said Niraj Desai, DISH's vice president of product management. "DISH Anywhere on Fire TV is an excellent value that further brings choice and flexibility to our customers' television experience."

DISH Anywhere is now available on the Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, when paired with the Hopper 3, Hopper 2, or a first-generation Hopper connected to a Sling Adapter. VIP users can use DISH Anywhere to tap into on-demand titles.
