Sony Smartens Up TVs with SMP-N200 Streaming Player

By Rachel Cericola

Without a doubt, the entertainment experience has changed (for the better!) since TV collided with the web. However, we know there are plenty of you out there still staring at a not-so-smart TV. Sony says they can smarten up any viewing experience with the new SMP-N200 Streaming Player.

Like Roku or D-Link's Boxee Box, this set-top can add a slew of web content to any TV, whether it's in the living room, bedroom or basement. That means you can have a whole host of new things to watch, courtesy of the web. If that TV just happens to be a 3D TV, the SMP-N200 can support that as well, promising new HD and 3D content through Sony Entertainment Network, which also includes the Sony 3D Experience.

This is actually Sony's second-generation Streaming Player. Besides a more compact form factor, it promises a better quality of streaming content, more content, and of course, the aforementioned 3D support.

Another handy feature is DLNA support. This allows users to stream audio, video and photos from compatible devices, such as a tablet or computer.

Connection options allow users to hook into almost any TV and any home network, with composite, component and HDMI outputs, as well as Wi-Fi and wired networking options.

"The Streaming Player is ideal for consumers who want to upgrade to a connected television, but are happy with the TV they currently have," said Charles Speidel, VP of Sony's Home Audio and Video Group. "Whether using it in the family room or on a secondary television in the house this new set-top-box offers access to the full complement of streaming content available from Sony, without committing to the cost of a new Bravia."

The SMP-N200 comes with a remote control. However, it also works with the free Sony Media Remote app, which is now available for both Apple and Android devices.

Sony says that the SMP-N200 Streaming Player will start selling in October. Expect the box to carry an MSRP of $99.99.
