Denon Debuts AH-D7200 Headphones for $999

By Rachel Cericola

In just a few short days, thousands of people will get headphones for the holidays. However, Denon Electronics is hoping you'll wait for the new year for something truly special.

The company just announced the AH-D7200, a pair of reference headphones that were designed with the most discerning audiophiles in mind.

As with most headphones, sound and comfort were the top two concerns when creating this model. However, to make the AH-D7200 stand out, the company worked with new designs and new materials that not only make this set look cool, but sound cool as well.

At the heart of the AH-D7200 is the 50mm FreeEdge driver diaphragm, which was made from a nano-fiber material. This was chosen because it's tough, but also light. Denon also says it can deliver "an accurate pistonic motion without distortion." The drive units are also mounted to vibration-reducing engineering resin baffles, in order to cut down on distortion.

Those drivers are fitted into self-dampening natural walnut housings. This doesn't just make the AH-D7200 very stylish, but also gives it a more "speaker-like" sound. Connecting these drive units to the amplifier powering the headphones is a removable 7N (99.99999-percent pure) oxygen-free copper cable. That's terminated with a machine-cut metal plug with a copper trim-ring and a "floating jack" design for the connections between the cable and the headphone earcups.

Denon has put those wood earcups on curved diecast aluminum hangers, with a headband that's finished in real sheepskin leather. That's some soft stuff, with memory foam that was picked to fit the widest possible range of head sizes and shapes.

Look for the Denon AH-D7200 to start selling in January 2017, with an MSRP of $999.
