The wait for a new Star Wars has been a long one -- and we're not even close to the film's 2015 release date. However, it looks like your patience is going to be rewarded, with some very cool IMAX imagery.
Bad Robot has taken to Twitter (again) to tease the production of Star Wars Episode VII. The most recent tweet shows an IMAX camera hovering over the Abu Dhabi desert -- or as fans like to call it, "Tatooine." The image is accompanied by the hashtag "#bestformatever."
This news is the latest in a long line of teases, but it's not surprising. Earlier this year, IMAX strengthened its partnership with Disney, who just happens to be the proud owner of the Star Wars franchise. As a result, Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Maleficent both received theatrical IMAX releases this year. Guardians of the Galaxy will get a similar treatment on August 1, 2014, with Avengers: Age of Ultron, Tomorrowland and Star Wars Episode VII to follow in 2015.
Due to that previous announcement, we knew Star Wars Episode VII would get an IMAX release, but filming in IMAX is a whole different thing -- a good thing.
Now the remaining question is: How much of the movie will be shot in the IMAX format? Director J.J. Abrams previously put IMAX into two of his biggest blockbusters, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol and Star Trek Into Darkness. However, IMAX footage only made up about 30 minutes of Mission: Impossible's 132-minute runtime, with Star Trek Into Darkness getting the same out of its 133 minutes.
It's important to note that this IMAX camera does not look like the same one we reported on earlier this month for the release of Transformers: Age of Extinction. According to SlashFilm, Star Wars is getting 70mm IMAX footage (in addition to the previously announced 35mm film). The IMAX 3D Digital Camera that Michael Bay used was a fully integrated dual 65mm 4K digital large-format 3D camera. For more on the camera being used in Episode VII, check out the IMAX website.
Star Wars Episode VII stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Lupita Nyong'o, Gwendoline Christie and Max von Sydow. Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker are also scheduled to reprise their roles from the original trilogy.
Star Wars: Episode VII will hit theaters on December 18, 2015.
