New IMAX 3D Digital Camera Offers Full 4K Resolution to Both Eyes for Transformers: Age of Extinction

By Rachel Cericola

Michael Bay is about to make history with the upcoming release of Transformers: Age of Extinction. We're not talking about the director adding a new character or even his move to make Mark Wahlberg the film's lead. What's going on behind the scenes is probably one of the coolest tidbits about the upcoming summer blockbuster.

IMAX just announced that Transformers: Age of Extinction will be the very first film to use the IMAX 3D Digital Camera. This new piece of equipment is the world's first fully integrated dual 65mm 4K digital large-format 3D camera -- and it's even cooler than it sounds.

According to IMAX, this camera is easier to use than all of the other 3D cameras currently out there. That's probably because it's lightweight and less than half the size of other 3D digital camera systems on the market. However, that small size doesn't mean that the image is reduced in any way. This is actually a true 4K stereo camera, which can capture both the left eye and right eye images at a full 4K resolution. The end result is stunning image quality that can put you right in the middle of the action like never before, up close with the Autobots!

When the film hits IMAX theaters on June 27, 2014, make sure to take note of those chase scenes and helicopter shots; everything was filmed in high-resolution 3D in a way that IMAX says was previously impossible. The compact size of the camera makes it easier to capture all of that action. Also worth noting is that if you're planning to see this film in an IMAX theater (and it sounds like you should be doing that), you will see all of the sequences filmed with the IMAX 3D Digital Cameras in a 1.9:1 aspect ratio. This promises to deliver a 26 percent larger native 4K IMAX image to viewers, for a truly immersive IMAX 3D experience.

"For more than 40 years, IMAX's 15perf / 65mm film cameras have been the highest-resolution cameras in the world -- delivering 10x more resolution than 35mm film," said IMAX in an announcement. "IMAX designed the IMAX 3D Digital Camera as a complementary tool to its other 2D and 3D IMAX film camera systems as well as other camera technology that filmmakers may be using. Filmmakers typically use several different types of cameras on set for different types of shots, so IMAX wanted to be able to provide them with the right tool for the right job to help achieve their creative vision."
