Aperion Upgrades Intimus Speaker Line, Drops Prices

By Rachel Cericola

Everyone wants more for less. Aperion Audio is one company planning to give the people what they want.

The direct-to-consumer manufacturer just announced updates to models in its Aperion Intimus Home Theater Speaker Line. This new speakers promise better performance, but at 20-percent off the price of its predecessors.

Our editor, Chris Boylan gave high marks to the original Intimus speakers in his review, but Aperion says that the new models are more energy-efficient and even better sounding. They've also ditched the old wooden base with cast aluminum feet in favor of a simulated wood finish.

The Aperion Intimus Tower has two 4-inch woven-fiberglass mid-woofers and a 1-inch custom-designed silk-dome tweeter. Other features include an anti-resonant cabinet, a curved-edge design aesthetic, and a small footprint. Additional specs on the 2-way Aperion Intimus 4T Tower include a rated frequency response of 60-20,000 Hz (+/- 3 dB) and 50-22,000 Hz (+/- 6 dB), a nominal impedance of 6 ohms, and a sensitivity rating of 88 dB. Weighing in at 19 pounds with measurements of 34 inches high by 5 inches wide by 7.5 inches deep, the 4T Tower is priced at $550 per pair.

Rounding out the line is Intimus 4C Center ($130 each), the Intimus 4B Satellite ($110 each), and the Intimus 4BP Bipole Surround Speaker ($160 each). The set can be configured as an audiophile-grade 5.1 home theater system for under $1200, which includes the Aperion Bravus 8A subwoofer ($299).

"Given the recent economy, our design goal for the updated Intimus series was to deliver an even better value to end users without impacting the sonic performance," says Ken Humphreys, Aperion's lead speaker engineer and a 25-year-veteran of speaker and component design. "We looked at every element of Intimus to determine what it contributes to the user experience. For example, most home theaters now use LCD or plasma TVs, so we eliminated the magnetic shielding used to prevent speakers from distorting the picture on CRT TVs. We're also proud of the redesigned base and a cabinet fit and finish that still surpass those for any speaker in this price range."

According to the Aperion Audio website, the new Intimus line is available now in a cherry. Ash Black is expected to follow, starting November 30, 2011.

Aperion offers free shipping, a risk-free 30-day trial, and lifetime customer support on all Intimus speaker products. Another bonus is that the company will include a free speaker care kit with each purchase.
