Can I Control a PS3 (Bluetooth) with a Harmony Universal Remote (IR)?

By Chris Boylan

Question:

Dear Expert,

I'll make this short: can Logitech's Harmony One remote, or any other universal remote control, operate a Sony PlayStation 3 considering that the PS3 works via Bluetooth, but these remotes work via infrared (IR)?

-Samantha G.

Answer:

Hello, Samantha,

The answer is "Yes and No." Out of the box, with no additional accessories, Harmony One cannot control a PS3, nor can any other IR-based remote.

But for $20 or less, you can buy a PS3 remote from a company called "Nyko" which comes with an IR-to-bluetooth adapter for the PS3.

With this adapter/remote you can program just about any universal remote (including the Harmony remotes) to operate a PS3. There are some functions missing (notably power on/off), but it's really the only option right now as no one is making a universal remote with both IR and Bluetooth control.

Here's a link:

UPDATE (May, 2009): Logitech has now released an adapter specifically for the PS3 that allows any Harmony remote to provide complete control of the PS3 (including power on/off).  See our full review here:

Hope that helps.

Regards,

-Chris
