For fans of immersive audio, aka "3D Audio," things are looking up (literally... the speakers are above your head). While it can take some time for a new format to make its way to market, it's never too early to start keeping track of what content is out there for those who like to be truly surrounded by sound.
For those unfamiliar with the term, immersive sound or immersive audio entails an enhancement to current surround sound formats and systems by adding sound that emanates from above the heads of the audience. This brings to theaters and home theaters a truly immersive listening experience with sound coming not just from all around you but from above you as well.
The two leading formats for immersive audio at home are Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Dolby Atmos has had a bit of a head start, with a number of different manufacturers offering Atmos-compatible gear and several dozen titles available now on Blu-ray. DTS came to the immersive sound game a little later.
At publication time (February, 2016), DTS:X upgrades for home theater gear have started rolling out to high-end gear from Denon, Yamaha and Marantz, with upgrades coming soon to receivers and processors from other manufacturers.
As far as the software goes, selection is still a bit limited. The SciFi thriller Ex Machina was the first title to get DTS:X treatment for home, followed by American Ultra, The Last Witch Hunter and Crimson Peak.
Below is a list of the Blu-ray (and soon Ultra HD Blu-ray) titles that are available now or are announced which will include DTS:X immersive surround soundracks. We'll keep this list updated as new titles are announced.
