Watch Avatar 3D the James Cameron Way on Blu-ray 3D

By Ian White

Independence Day is almost here... sorta. In ten days, Avatar 3D will be available on Blu-ray 3D Disc to those lucky souls who already own a Panasonic 3D HDTV, or who plan on buying one this holiday season. There are already great deals on Amazon which include a 50" Panasonic 3D HDTV, 3D glasses, a 3D-enabled Blu-ray player, and an exclusive copy of the film. We have already seen segments of the Blu-ray 3D Disc and it looked downright jaw-dropping. We wish it had come out months ago, but now is better than never.

Panasonic has very thoughtfully made Cameron's calibration suggestions available on their website and we think they look rather good (having just completed our advanced ISF training). Will they best a proper calibration with test gear? Probably not (unless Joel Silver or Kevin Miller of ISF already did the work for you), but we suspect that they won't hurt the picture quality one bit.

We have spilled a lot of electronic ink on BPBS about what a terrible job the industry has done so far to promote the burgeoninig Blu-ray 3D market, and we sincerely hope that the release of Avatar 3D is the spark that ignites a massive surge of new titles. There are a lot of Blu-ray 3D titles slated to be released in the next few months, but none of them have the gestalt of Cameron's award-winning masterpiece that not only broke every box-office record, but made the strongest case yet for the format. Once you see Avatar 3D on Blu-ray 3D, we suspect you won't be sitting on the fence that much longer. James Cameron is convinced that 3D is here to stay and we wouldn't bet against him.
