VUDU Unveils XL2 Set-Top Box: High Def Movies On Demand for the High-End Crowd

The VUDU movie/TV download set-top box has made quite a name for itself and rightly so. Bridging the gap between the HDTV and the internet with a vast library of major studio content, much of it now available for rent in full 1080p and 5.1-channel audio, VUDU works well and stands alone with its unique functionality. They added a higher capacity hard disk drive inside for all that video storage, an impressive one terabyte available on the XL model, so what would be the next frontier?

The largely plastic, cigar box-sized VUDU machine has a gadget-like appearance, not an ideal fit for a high-end home theater. So enter the VUDU XL2, which brings with it all of the newest features from its predecessors (VUDU boxes are frequently, easily firmware updated thanks to the always-on internet connection) in a form factor like no other.

The fancy new rack-mountable VUDU XL2 is a vision in black aluminum.

Arriving in a wider, industry-standard rack-mountable chassis with an aerospace-grade aluminum bezel, the XL2 is aimed at the custom-install market, for installation in high-end home theaters. It will be available exclusively through a network of VUDU-certified installers, at a suggested retail price of $1,299.

The XL2's combination of internet protocol and infrared control enable the device to be integrated into a variety of system configurations. HD signals can also be routed between different locations throughout the home using simple video switchers. A 1080i signal can be passed over component video, full 1080p over HDMI, these in addition to the digital optical and coaxial audio outs. USB and Ethernet connections are also provided. All in all, a classy way to bring the latest big-name movies and TV programs to your living room or home theater.

The VUDU XL2 supports up to 1080p output over HDMI and up to 1080i output over component video. It's as High Def as High Def gets.

Vudu recently announced expansion of its on-demand movie catalog to over 10,000 titles, over 1100 of which are available in high definition.  Over 160 of the high def movies are available in Vudu's ultra-high quality 1080p HDX format with image and sound quality that approaches Blu-ray Disc.

If you're looking to bring the VUDU home for a little less coin, check out Best Buy's offer on the standard vudu box.  It's only $299 with an exclusive $200 credit toward movie rentals and purchases.
