Sony Packs Hybrid Log-Gamma into Compact 4K HDR Home Theater Projector

By Rachel Cericola

When 4K first popped up for home theater use, it was hard to find a lot of 4K projectors. There are definitely more to choose from these days. However, Sony Electronics is making it so you really only need to look for one -- the VPL-VW675ES.

Designed for home theater or living room use, the compact 4K projector features support for the latest 4K standards and High Dynamic Range (HDR), so you always have the brightest, sharpest images.

However, the real hook on this newly announced product is that it will be Sony's first projector to support Hybrid Log Gamma (HyLG), so it will be ready for HDR broadcasting services and user-generated content. That HyLG support will come via a firmware update as soon as the new HDMI spec is standardized. (Stay tuned for more info on that.)

As part of the ES lineup, the VPL-VW675ES features HDR 10 support and works with streamed HDR content from Amazon, Netflix, and other video streaming services, as well as Ultra HD Blu-ray players. This means it boasts the ability to project better brightness levels, better colors, and a better contrast.

The VPL-VW675ES also has a feature that allows customers to tweak the average screen brightness, based on your environment or preferences, all while maintaining accurate HDR reproduction.

Other features include native 4K SXRD panels, Sony's TRILUMINOS engine design, Motionflow picture technology for fast-moving sports and action images, and the latest HDMI standard and HDCP 2.2 on both inputs. It also has a built-in RF 3D transmitter, 1,800 lumens brightness, and a dynamic contrast ratio of 350,000:1. Sony has even included its own long-lasting lamp technology, so you can get up to 6,000 hours of operation (in Low Mode).

Installers are privy to Projector Calibration Pro software on HD through 4K Sony home theater models. However, the VPL-VW675ES does have built-in color correction tools and a compact powered 2.06 zoom and wide-angle lens for a flexible and easy installation.

"Sony is the leader in full native 4K resolution projectors for the home theater market," says André Floyd, product manager for projectors at Sony Electronics Inc. "The successor to the award-winning VPL-VW665ES introduced just last year at CEDIA, the VPL-VW675ES demonstrates our continuing commitment to provide cutting-edge home cinema technology to our customers and the custom install channel."

Sony has priced the VPL-VW675ES at $14,999.99. You can expect this home theater projector to start selling sometime in November 2016.
