Sony Debuts 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player for Custom Install Crowd

By Rachel Cericola

When you call in an installer, you want the best of the best. Sony Electronics is hoping to help the custom install crowd to deliver that.

The company just announced the UBP-X1000ES, a new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player specifically designed for the custom installation market. The player made its debut during a press briefing today at the CEDIA Expo in Dallas, Texas.

Designed to be the centerpiece of your high-tech home theater, the UBP-X1000ES can play 4K Blu-rays as well as stream 4K video services. It also offers High Dynamic Range (HDR), which boasts better detail, brightness, and contrast.

There's even a dedicated picture mode for HDR content, as well as Sony video processing that can upscale 1080p content to a near-4K 60p resolution. Sony also says that when playing 4K HDR content on a Sony 4K HDR TV, the player will rock out a special Sony algorithm to deliver the proper brightness and color gradations.

As part of the ES Series, the UBP-X1000ES boasts a Precision HD drive, so it can play a variety of other physical media formats. That means it can handle DVDs and CDs, as well as DVD-Audio, SA-CD, Blu-ray 3D, and BD-ROM. The UBP-X1000ES also features a 32-bit DAC, so it supports playback of native DSD (at up to 11.2 MHz) and LPCM (at up to 192kHz) hi-res music files.

Other features include a Frame and Beam (FB) chassis, two HDMI outputs with separate audio and video signal paths, 2ch gold analog and coaxial digital outputs, Wi-Fi, RS232C, and more. There are also removable rack-mount ears for the UBP-X1000ES, which are to be sold separately.

Also worth noting is that Sony is planning to have the UBP-X1000ES certified by home control and automation system vendors such as Control4, Crestron, Savant, and others.

"The new UBP-X1000ES player has been long awaited by custom installers who desire a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player that provides a ‘one-stop' solution for their clients' premium entertainment needs," says Yukio Ishikawa, director of home entertainment systems for Sony Electronics. "Our new reference model has been specifically designed to deliver the highest quality video and audio possible and will excite the most demanding A/V enthusiasts."

Sony will offer the UBP-X1000ES exclusively through the custom install channel starting sometime in spring 2017. Pricing will be announced closer to the product's launch date.
