Samsung Unveils Pricing/Availability Details of 2015 UHDTV and SUHDTV Lineup

By Rachel Cericola

Earlier this year, Samsung Electronics debuted its 2015 TV lineup at CES 2015 in Las Vegas. One of the most intriguing announcements was the SUHD, a lineup of 4K TVs that use nano-crystals to pack an even bigger, brighter, more lifelike punch.

As with most things we see at CES, we were left wondering about these and the rest of the company's 2015 lineup -- mainly when we would see these TVs start selling, as well as at what price. Now, we can stop wondering and start buying. Samsung just announced availability and pricing for its 2015 TV lineup, including those SUHD TVs. First, let's take a breath and a step back.

First know that 2015 will be the year of Tizen, the new operating system Samsung is using for its latest Smart TVs. This web-based platform promises an intuitive user interface for easy navigation, as well as the Quick Connect feature, which can link the TV with select mobile devices for a second-screen experience. Powered by an OctaCore processor, Tizen also boasts great graphics and other new features.

This new lineup has plenty of the aforementioned Curved SUHD TVs, which use Cadmium-free nano-crystal technology to deliver the most lifelike images possible. Another interesting feature is Peak Illuminator, which boasts a wider color range, detailed color expression, better contrast and brighter overall images. Of course, SUHD TVs also promise improved panel efficiency and local dimming technologies, which can minimize black loss and pump up those contrast levels even more.

With flat and curved options ranging from 40 to 78 inches, there should be a little something here for everyone -- and every room.

Samsung's JS9500 Curved SUHD TV will have that nano-crystal technology and full array local-dimming LED backlight, as well as Auto Depth Enhancer. The latter is a feature that can adjust the picture contrast for a greater sense of depth. This model also has PurColor technology to deliver color as the filmmakers and content creators originally envisioned, with more detailed shades. Also, the JS9500 has something called the "One Connect Box" feature, which basically means that all of the "brains" of the TV are packed into a box that can be swapped out when it's time for an upgrade. The 65-inch JS9500 Curved SUHD TV will start selling this month, with an MSRP of $6,499.99.

Another Curved TV option is the JS9100 SUHD TV. This model has Peak Illuminator Pro technology, which can boost the LED illumination behind certain regions of the display to make the content pop. Available as a lone 78-inch model, this TV also has UHD upscaling. Look for the JS9100 in May, priced at $9,999.99.

Samsung's JS9000 Curved SUHD TV Series has an edge-lit LED panel in three screen sizes. This line also has the Peak Illuminator Pro feature and Precision Black for better darkness levels. Besides the new Smart TV platform, the JS9000 allows the TV to share content with select mobile devices and vice versa, all with the touch of one button. Available with a Shirring design, the 48-inch UN48JS9000, the 55-inch UN55JS9000, and the 65-inch UN65JS9000 are all selling now, priced at $3,499.99, $3,999.99 and $4,999.99, respectively.

For something not so curvy, Samsung also has a flat SUHD option for the year. The JS8500 SUHD TV has the 4K image, the Precision Black feature, and the new Smart TV platform. Available as the 55-inch UN55JS8500 and the 65-inch UN65JS8500, both models are selling now for $2,999.99 and $3999.99, respectively.

Samsung will also have several curved UHD TVs -- without the added "S." The JU6700 Curved UHD TV Series has the PurColor technology and that 4K image, which delivers an image up to four times the resolution of a 1080p HDTV. Expected sometime this spring, the JU6700 Series will include the 40-inch UN40JU6700 ($949.99), the 48-inch UN48JU6700 ($1,149.99), the 55-inch UN55JU6700 ($1,499.99), and the 65-inch UN65JU6700 ($2,699.99).

The last of the Curved UHD TVs for 2015 (for now) will be featured in the JU7500 Curved Series, which packs that 4K image and the upscaling options into five different screen sizes. Coming sometime this spring, the JU7500 lineup will include the 40-inch UN40JU7500 ($1,399.99), the 48-inch UN48JU7500 ($1,599.99), the 55-inch UN55JU7500 ($1,999.99), the 65-inch UN65JU7500 ($2,999.99), and the 78-inch UN78JU7500 ($5,999.99).

The last of the flat UHD TVs for 2015 (for now) will fall into the series of JU7100 UHD TVs. These six TVs will have the Peak Illuminator and UHD Dimming, the Smart TV features, and more. Look for the 40-inch UN40JU7100 ($1,399.99), the 50-inch UN50JU7100 ($1499.99), the 55-inch UN55JU7100 ($1,799.99), the 60-inch UN60JU7100 ($2,499.99), the 65-inch UN65JU7100 ($2,999.99), and the 75-inch UN75JU7100 ($4,999.99) to all start selling this month.

"Combining breathtaking design with technology that provides dazzling color, stark contrasts and superb brightness, our radically new line of SUHD and UHD televisions set a new industry standard for the best picture quality available today," said Dave Das, senior vice president of Samsung Electronics America. "In addition to featuring breakthrough display technology, our 2015 line is powered by our new Smart TV platform that not only brings consumers an intuitive user interface, but also makes it easy to share content between your Samsung mobile devices and 2015 Samsung televisions."
