New 2015 Samsung SUHD TV Line Focuses on Picture Quality and Style

By Rachel Cericola

Just a few days ago, Samsung Electronics was introducing us to Tizen, a brand-new Smart TV platform. Now, the company is giving us few TVs to put that on, namely the new SUHD TV lineup.

According to a recent announcement, the "S" in SUHD stands for "spectacular, smart, stylish and superb." While those aren't exactly scientific terms, we can tell you that some of that praise is well deserved. All of these models feature Quantum Dot technology, which the company first debuted a few weeks back.

That new tech means that each one of these sets was designed to surpass the limitations of previous displays. Maybe you didn't notice any limitations, but Samsung says that these new sets can deliver the ultimate in color, contrast and brightness. Some of that is accomplished via full array backlighting in the top of the line as well as Quantum Dots for enhanced color gamut.

Each set also has proprietary, eco-friendly nano-crystal technology, a new SUHD re-mastering engine, and a stylish curved design for a more immersive viewing experience. The nano-crystal semiconductor can actually deliver different colors of light, depending on their size. The end result yields gorgeous colors -- about 64 times more color expression than conventional TVs. The engine is another interesting perk, because it can actually analyze the brightness of on-screen images and adjust the TV's power consumption accordingly, all while still banging out killer contrast, darker blacks and that super brightness.

Samsung says that the company collaborated with 20th Century Fox to optimize content to meet SUHD standards and deliver an eye-popping viewing experience. As part of that partnership, Samsung worked with the Fox Innovation Lab to re-master multiple scenes from Ridley Scott's Exodus, making those moments perfect for these new SUHD TVs.

Of course, each of the nine screen sizes will also have the aforementioned Tizen Smart TV platform. This includes a new Smart Hub interface that's just one screen, making it easier and more intuitive. Other features include Quick Connect for pairing with Samsung smartphones via BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) technology, Samsung Sports Live, the Briefing on TV wake-up call, and the company's very own Milk Video service for discovering, collecting and sharing the web's best videos. However, the highlight of Tizen has to be an increased collection of UHD movies and TV shows from providers such as Amazon, Comcast, DIRECTV and Netflix. Samsung is also working with M-GO, a joint venture between Technicolor and DreamWorks Animation, to provide a new UHD movie download service utilizing its existing UHD Video Pack.

Those nine SUHD TVs will be divided up between the JS9500, JS9000 and JS8500 series, with screen sizes ranging from 48 to 88 inches. The JS9500 is the top-of-the-line model, with Samsung's Chamfer bezel design. The idea behind this was to add more depth to the TV screen, with a soft, textured Shirring design on the back.

"Our innovative heritage and spirit continue to push the boundaries of the home entertainment experience to new possibilities," said HS Kim, president of the visual display business at Samsung Electronics. "Regardless of the content source, Samsung provides the leading picture in the industry and will continue to do so with our SUHD TVs. Consumers can trust that we are more committed than ever to consistently deliver a superior home entertainment experience for years to come."

Additional details about each SUHD TV series, as well as pricing and availability, has yet to be announced.
