Netflix Will Offer High Dynamic Range 4K Content on LG TVs in 2015

By Rachel Cericola

When it comes to 4K Ultra HD content, every TV manufacturer wants to work with Netflix. The popular service first launched 4K streaming last year and has a slew of critically acclaimed titles, such as House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. However, in the near future, LG 4K TV owners are going to get something truly special: High Dynamic Range (HDR) 4K Netflix content.

This a big deal -- huge for LG 4K TV owners.

Even though Netflix added 4K streaming last year, HDR will mean that all of the TV shows and movies will look better than ever. In other words, we can expect darker blacks and whiter whites, all in the same frame. And of course, LG 4K TV owners will get a better image overall.

Greg Peters, Netflix's chief streaming and partnership officer, was at LG's CES 2015 press conference today to announce that the company's newly announced 4K OLED TVs will be among the first sets to get the goods. LG is also getting the thumbs up from Netflix, as one of the first Smart TV makers to receive a "Netflix Recommended TV" logo.

The "Netflix Recommended TV" program is a newly announced independent Smart TV evaluation program designed to help consumers identify televisions built for a superior Internet TV experience. A few of the things the program looks at is whether or not the TV turns on instantly, how quickly the app launches, and how fast the video can resume playback. If you see that logo, it should tell you that the product delivers a great Netflix experience right out of the box. Sony Electronics, Sharp Electronics, VIZIO and manufacturers of Roku TVs are expected to be part of the program as well.

"We've created the Netflix Recommended TV program to help consumers identify Smart TVs that offer better performance, easier menu navigation and new features that improve the experience for Internet TV services," said Neil Hunt, chief product officer at Netflix. "When you see a TV with the Netflix Recommended TV logo, it means that TV will provide an excellent Netflix experience, based on criteria our members tell us matter most."

Currently, there's no word on when HDR will launch on LG 4K TVs. However, we're guessing it will be part of the package when LG's eight new 4K OLED TVs start shipping in the coming months.
