LG Will Add Google TV to Its Smart TV Platform in 2012 HDTV Line

By Rachel Cericola

Just last week, LG was promising to announce an upgrade to its Smart TV platform. Now it looks like they can't wait until next week's Consumer Electronics Show to spill the beans. The company just announced plans to add Google TV to its 2012 lineup.

LG's Smart TV with Google TV will feature the goodness of the Google Android operating system, 3D effects and Smart TV technologies, all in one sharp HDTV.

These new HDTVs will fall under LG's Cinema 3D umbrella, meaning that the line will have LG's Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) technology -- also known as passive 3D. After making its big debut in 2011, passive 3D is best known for using 3D glasses that are similar to those used in commercial 3D theater settings. These lightweight glasses don't need to be charged and don't use batteries. Another 3D perk is that this TV will also include a 2D-to-3D conversion feature.

Beside the familiar Google interface, the TV will also feature LG's own Magic Remote QWERTY, which makes it easy to navigate through the many on-screen features. LG also says that this type of set is good for multi-taskers, allowing the viewer to search, access social networking, and watch TV all at the same time.

"LG has constantly strived to provide consumers with wider choices in home entertainment that bring the highest level of sophistication and convenience," said Havis Kwon, president and CEO of LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company. "Through Google TV, LG has merged Google's established Android operating system with LG's proven 3D and Smart TV technologies, offering consumers a new and enthralling TV experience."

Besides Google TV, LG says that more than 60 percent of the company's TVs will feature the Smart TV platform. Smart TV provides instant, on-screen access to services such as Netflix, VUDU, Hulu Plus, Amazon Video on Demand, Facebook, and many more. Additional information about LG's 2012 HDTV line should be coming next week, during the annual Consumer Electronics Show. The event will be held from January 10-13, 2012, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
