LG Unveils 2012 HDTV plans: Smart TV upgrades, Stylish new 3D Glasses

By Rachel Cericola

This could be a very happy New Year for LG. The company has announced several enhancements to their Smart TV and Cinema 3D TV lines to entice customers in 2012.

First up, LG is planning a slew of new Smart TV features for its Cinema 3D line. At present, the company has over 1200 different app offerings, which includes movies and social networking, as well as new ways to browse art and even donate to charity. Another nice perk is LG's 3D Zone, which is specifically designed for its 3D customers. In addition to 2D offerings, this area has a growing collection of 3D movies and TV shows, as well as an outlet to convert existing 2D movies.

"Even though the Smart TV market is in its infancy, LG is constantly introducing new features and upgrading existing ones in order to deliver the richest, most convenient Smart TV experience in the market today," said Havis Kwon, LG's president and CEO. "The features and functionality we'll be introducing in 2012 are, I believe, second to none when it comes to showing consumers how a Smart TV can improve their TV viewing experience."

New Smart TV features will be announced in January, at the 2012 Consumer Electronic Show.

What some of those advancements may be will have to wait until the company makes a formal announcement at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show, which runs from January 10 to 13 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

For now, we do know that the new Smart TV perks will be part of LG's Cinema 3D line. Making its debut in early 2011, this HDTV line uses Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) technology, better known as passive 3D TV. Introduced in 2011, with enhancements to come in 2012, this type of 3D technology promises a brighter, flicker-free 3D performance. It also boasts a more comfortable viewing experience, thanks to lighter, battery-free 3D glasses. These are similar to the ones you use at your local Cineplex.

LG's upcoming 3D glasses include (from left) the F320 clip-on, the Alain Mikli-designed F360, and the F310.

Speaking of which, LG is planning to update those 3D specs as well. According to Engadget, LG will debut three new models of 3D glasses that push fashion, as well as function. First up is the F310, which offers a slim frame. At a mere 13.5 grams, LG says that this model is 20 percent lighter than what they were previously peddling. The F320 offers a clip-on option, for those with prescription glasses, and these ones weight in at a remarkably light 5.5 grams.

The most stylish offering, however, will be the F360. This model is a joint effort with designer Alain Mikli. Weighing in at 16 grams, this model offers curvier lenses for a more immersive 3D experience.

Of course, all three models can also be worn out in public, at your local 3D movie theater -- but not until some time in the first quarter of 2012, which is when they're expected to beginnin shipping.

"Compared to active shutter glasses, LG's 3D glasses are far more comfortable to wear and much more affordable, making it possible for large groups and entire families to watch 3D programs and movies together," added Kwon. "LG is addressing two of the biggest barriers to 3D acceptance head-on and we're confident consumers will react favorably to our strategy in the coming year."
