Epson Kicks Off Backyard Home Theater Contest

By Rachel Cericola

The weather is getting warmer, which means it's safe to drag the projector out to the yard again. Ah yes, summer to everyone here at Big Picture Big Sound means hot dogs, potato salad, beer, and making your neighbors jealous.

It means the same thing to the people at Epson, too. The company just announced the Great American Movie Night campaign, which encourages friends and families to grab a lawn chair, some S'mores fixings, and enjoy big-screen entertainment in the biggest venue possible -- the outdoors.

Epson is kicking off the campaign to promote the MovieMate line, the perfect summer party companion. MovieMate projectors combine a front projection unit, a CD/DVD player and speakers into a compact, portable package. Hey, they even include microphone inputs so you can rock out with family and friends to some huge screen Karaoke.  And the portability factor means you can even take it to a friend's house, if they want to sweeten the deal with some steaks.

Epson's MovieMate 60 features a DVD slot and eject button right on the front and powered speakers in the rear.

Epson will be running tips on its website from April 19 through June 13. Some of the tidbits include equipment checklists, ways to better setup your backyard system, movie suggestions, snack recipes, sample movie night invitations and more. Visitors are also encouraged to upload pics of their backyard party, and possibly win a $2500 backyard theater makeover.

That's not all, though. The company will also run a Projector-A-Day Giveaway from May 17 through May 23. Winners will receive an Epson MovieMate 60, which we had the privilege of reviewing earlier this year. Sadly, we couldn't drag it out into the snow, but if you're one of the lucky winners, the timing would make it an excellent addition to any Memorial Day bash.

For more information about both contests, as well as hosting your own backyard event, check out Epson's Great American Movie Night website.
