Details Emerge on Sony HT-ST5000 Soundbar: Dolby Atmos 7.1.2, High Res Audio, Under $1500

By Chris Boylan

Dolby Atmos is making its way into more home theater products, including a new flagship sound bar from Sony. The HT-ST5000 soundbar features Dolby Atmos virtual 7.1.2 surround (seven main channels, one subwoofer and two height channels), as well as support for high resolution audio including DSD (Direct Stream Digital).

As far as the "7.1.2 surround" goes, the rear and surround channels on the ST5000 are virtual, based on Sony's S-Force PRO Front Surround technology. The height channels use built-in Dolby Atmos elevation modules to bounce sound of the ceiling for immersive height effects. This means you won't need to run any additional wires or speakers to the ceilings or to the back of your room.

The sound bar features three HDCP 2.2-compatible HDMI inputs, one HDMI ARC-compatible output, a USB input, Bluetooth with NFC support, as well as digital optical and analog connections. The ST5000 supports 4K Ultra HD video passthrough with HDR (High Dynamic Range) compatibility.

The ST5000 supports wireless streaming and multi-room playback via built-in Google Chromecast and Sony's SongPal whole home music app. The soundbar also works with Google Home so you can tell the ST5000 to turn up or down the volume, skip to the next track or pause the music while safely ensconced in your comfy couch.
