Cyber Monday Sales Hit Record $1.25 Billion

By Rachel Cericola

Apparently, we weren't the only ones seeking out online bargains earlier this week. Cyber Monday 2011 has passed, but retailers are still feeling the after-effects -- and it's all good.

According to Reuters, Cyber Monday set an online sales record, with totals around $1.25 billion for Monday alone. These numbers are up about 22 percent from last year's big shopping day, confirms comScore.

"Cyber Monday was yet another historic day for e-commerce, with online spending reaching a record $1.25 billion," said comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni. "It was just the second billion dollar spending day on record, following on the heels of Cyber Monday 2010. While last year saw Cyber Monday rank as the heaviest online spending day of the year for the first time ever, it will be interesting to watch the next couple of weeks to see if any future individual days in 2011 manage to leapfrog this year's highest day-to-date."

Department stores, such as J.C. Penney and Macy's, saw the biggest sales and increases. Those stores, in addition to Nordstrom, have spent the most on advertising and revamping websites to attract customers.

Of course, we saw our share of sales on electronics, including HDTVs, Blu-ray players, tablets, speakers, and much more.

That marketing investment has certainly paid off, with online retail as a whole doing pretty well this season. To date, holiday online shopping has brought in about $15 billion to retailers since the beginning of November, says comScore.

We're expecting those numbers to get a big boost, with plenty of retailers such as Amazon, extending Cyber Monday sales all week. We can also expect a jump from last-minute shoppers, as well as those seeking post-holiday bargains.
