Atlantic Introduces First 7-Channel Sound Bar

By Rachel Cericola

Sound bars make for a nice, compact sound solution. The problem is, no matter how cool it is, you can only get so much from one cabinet, right? Maybe not.

Atlantic Technology just announced the world's first 7-channel soundbar, the FS-7.0. Designed for home theater use, the FS-7.0 promises sound reproduction for all seven channels of a home theater soundtrack, from a single, 40-inch wall-mountable speaker.

The speaker's front baffle has three 1-inch soft dome tweeters to handle upper frequencies. There's also a pair of 4x6-inch woofers for upper bass and midrange reproduction. The left driver handles the right front channel and half of the center channel. The right driver takes up the other half of the center, as well as duties on the left front side. LCR treble is handled by three 1-inch tweeters.

For the surrounds, the company has whipped up a whole new pair of full range 3.25-inch drivers, which are mounted at either side of the cabinet. Each of these patent-pending drivers also features a triple voice coil design, which allows them to reproduce side and rear surrounds, as well as part of the front channels.

In case you want to add the all-important "point one" into the mix, Atlantic invites you to couple the FS-7.0 with its new SB-800. This 8-inch subwoofer can crank 100 watts, but can handle linear output down to 32 Hz and output of up to 103 dB in a 2,000-cubic-foot room.

Atlantic Technology's FS-7.0 can fit under a flat panel or be mounted on the wall.

"Single-enclosure surround sound systems have become an important part of the home theater marketplace," comments Steve Feinstein, Atlantic's director of marketing and product development. "But we've never been happy with the digital processing approach that has dominated the category. So we pored over the psycho-acoustic research, went back to the speaker design drawing board, and fleshed out an all-speaker solution that retains every iota of the original sound information, but re-distributes it among a sophisticated driver array to deliver cleaner, fuller, and more convincing surround sound than we've heard from any other system."

Both units will be available this month. The FS-7.0 will come in gloss black for $800; the SB-800 subwoofer will sell in matte black for $300.
