XPAND Makes it Personal with YOUNIVERSAL Universal 3D Glasses

By Greg Robinson

3D-focused XPAND used the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to showcase their latest 3D product, the YOUNIVERSAL line of universal 3D eyewear. These fashionable and lightweight active shutter glasses feature what XPAND calls "the world's fastest lenses," and promise to address the growing need for a universal 3D glasses solution compatible with myriad 3D TVs from different manufacturers.

Highlighting the YOUNIVERSAL's feature set is its high degree of personalization made possible by a unique smartphone application (iPhone & Android) developed by XPAND. Using the app, YOUNIVERSAL owners are able to optimize their 3D experience to best suit their own preferences. For example, users will be able to adjust just how aggressively the 3D effect is rendered and also adjust for the level of ambient light present in the viewing environment. The YOUNIVERSAL's customization software will also be available as a traditional computer-based installation.

In addition to its use of customization software, the YOUNIVERSALS also feature a rechargeable battery, assorted frame sizes, and an integrated USB upgrade port and communication module that promises to work with infrared (IR), Bluetooth, radio frequency (RF), and DLP-Link.

XPAND's YOUNIVERSALS will be available in April, but pricing has yet to be determined.
