XBox One Gets Over-the-Air DVR Capabilities Thanks to Tablo TV App and Tuner

By Rachel Cericola

If you're still toying with the idea of cutting the cord, Nuvyyo wants to give you a little nudge.

The makers of the Tablo Over-the-Air (OTA) HDTV DVR just announced that the Tablo app is now available on the Xbox One. This is great for Xbox users, since Microsoft had previously abandoned any and all plans to release an Xbox DVR.

Of course, you will need a Tablo set-top box, a USB hard drive, and an HDTV antenna to complete the setup. The Tablo hardware runs $219.99 for the 2-tuner model and $299.99 for the 4-tuner OTA DVR. It's still sort of a small price to pay, considering the chunk most of us spend on cable and/or satellite services. Just know that there's also an EPG, which runs $4.99 per month, $49.99 per year, or $149.99 for a lifetime's worth of service.

If you have all of those things in place, the app is free in the Xbox App Store. Because the Tablo OTA DVR attaches to your Wi-Fi router instead of your TV, you can use the app to discover, record, and stream both live and recorded broadcast television programs through the Xbox One.

"Many cord cutters were left without an OTA DVR option for their gaming system of choice when Microsoft put their project plans on hold," said Grant Hall, CEO at Nuvyyo. "We are excited to provide the gaming community with a Tablo App for Xbox One, bringing us even closer to our goal of becoming the universal app for live TV and recorded broadcast programs on all your favorite devices."

According to Nuvyyo, version 1.0 of the Tablo App for Xbox will include most of Tablo's familiar screens and features. That will include playback of live TV and recordings, Netflix-style TV guides for broadcast content discovery and search, as well as pausing of live TV, preview-enabled fast-forward commercial skipping, and more.

It should be mentioned that the new app can also be used on PCs running the Windows 10 Anniversary Edition operating system. Check out the Tablo website for more information.
