Waterfall Audio Hurricane EVO Glass Loudspeakers: Don't Drop 'Em!

By Chris Chiarella

French manufacturer Waterfall Audio recently introduced their stunning floorstanding glass loudspeakers, the flagship tower models Victoria EVO and Iguasçu EVO, to the United States. Now they have unveiled their latest creation, the more compact and affordable "Hurricane EVO." Part of Waterfall's Ultra Flat Line, Hurricane EVO is designed to be used in a two-channel setup or a full home theater suite, freestanding or hung on the wall, or with optional stands.

Stylistically, the glass baffles are what make the Hurricane EVO unique, imparting a head-turning appearance almost as if the speaker is floating in the air. The white, black or silver die-cast aluminum cabinet eliminates internal reflections, with magnetic grilles in matching colors, or green or orange for a stylish contrast. Each speaker ships with one flat and one angled wall bracket. Shelf or floor stands are sold separately by Waterfall in white, black and silver.

Another element of Waterfall's unique enclosure design is its Heatstream technology, which prevents the heat buildup that is often unavoidable after long hours of listening at high volume. The Hurricane EVO is a two-driver, two-way design with very high power-handling abilities--up to 400 watts--without audible compression.

Proprietary transducers were created for Waterfall by high-end French manufacturer Atohm. The LD100 Absolute Series bass/midrange driver features an FEA-optimized motor with 60mm neodymium ring and a copper eddy-current ring, both of which reduce distortion. The stiff cone utilizes Low Diffraction Surrounding (LDS) for improved linearity, extending the bass response to 95Hz and enabling the speaker to be used without a subwoofer in most multi-room installations. Sonically and aesthetically though, Hurricane EVO also pairs well with Waterfall's new High Force subwoofers.

The SD20 tweeter offers an extended frequency response to 28kHz, and has a neodymium magnet and a treated silk dome that uses an Anamorphic Dispersion Pattern (ADP) for improved off-axis dispersion and limited reflection of high frequencies. The ferrofluid-filled gap and aluminum voice-coil former further enhance the necessary heat dissipation.

The Waterfall Audio Hurricane EVO loudspeaker is available now at a suggested retail price of $749.95 each (per speaker).
