Warner Offers HD DVD to Blu-ray Upgrade Program: RED2BLU
By Rachel Cericola
Warner is offering an excellent upgrade deal titled RED2BLU. Basically, this will allow high-def DVD owners to trade in their HD DVDs for the Blu-ray version of the same movie. Even better, you can keep using those discs as coasters; Warner doesn't even want them -- the cover art will do just fine.
Just go to the RED2BLU website and enter the discs that you want to upgrade. Then pop the original cover art into the mail, along with $4.95 per disc (some multi-disc sets will set you back $9.95 or $14.95), plus a flat $6.95 shipping charge for your entire order. So technically it's not free, but it's better than any Blu-ray sale we've seen, particularly since you get to keep your old HD DVDs sans artwork.
In case you've blocked the memories, HD DVD users weren't too fond of Warner during the format wars - Warner dealt the knockout blow to the ailing format by switching exclusively to Blu-ray in January, 2008. But this new deal should heal a few of those old wounds.
Don't expect to do the trade for your parents, friends and foes; you can only trade one of each title, with a maximum of 25 titles per household. Check the official rules for more info. Once the studio receives your shipment, you can expect your new discs within four to five weeks.
