Warner Bros. Mad Max: Fury Road and San Andreas to Get Dolby Atmos Sound on Blu-ray Disc

By Rachel Cericola

"Oh, what a day! What a lovely day!"

It is definitely a lovely day, because we know that not one, but two blockbusters are coming to Blu-ray -- and both will be packing Dolby Atmos soundtracks.

First up is Mad Max: Fury Road, which will arrive on Blu-ray on September 1, 2015. Both the Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack and the Blu-ray Combo Pack will include Dolby Atmos, so you can experience the mayhem and of course, the madness, all with immersive 3D sound.

Besides the audio, both releases will include the theatrical version of the film (with the 3D edition adding in a 3D copy of the film), as well as a standard-def DVD copy and Digital HD with UltraViolet. Other goodies include the featurettes "Maximum Fury: Filming Fury Road," "Mad Max: Fury on Four Wheels," "The Road Warriors: Max and Furiosa," "The Tools of the Wasteland," "The Five Wives: So Shiny, So Chrome," and "Fury Road: Crash & Smash," as well as a collection of Deleted Scenes.

The fourth film in the franchise stars Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Zoë Kravitz, Riley Keough, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and others. The official synopsis is: "Haunted by his turbulent past, Mad Max believes the best way to survive is to wander alone. Nevertheless, he becomes swept up with a group fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by an elite Imperator, Furiosa. They are escaping a Citadel tyrannized by the Immortan Joe, from whom something irreplaceable has been taken. Enraged, the Warlord marshals all his gangs and pursues the rebels ruthlessly in the high-octane Road War that follows." Of course, you could also just read our own Tom Fugalli's "Mad Max: Fury Road Review."

Warner Bros. also plans to release the Mad Max 4-Film Blu-ray Anthology on September 1, which will include Mad Max (1979), The Road Warrior (1981), Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985), and Mad Max: Fury Road on Blu-ray disc. There's no word on this set getting any Atmos, although we're guessing the Fury Road disc will be a pick-up from the regular release. It will also include a DVD version of the documentary Madness of Max, as well as a set of Mad Max Anthology trading cards.

If you can wait until October 13, Warner Bros. will be cooking up some Dolby Atmos for Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's San Andreas. This blockbuster will also be available as a Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack and Blu-ray Combo Pack, both with the Atmos track as an option.

Both versions come with a standard-def DVD version of the movie and the Digital HD with UltraViolet. The special features include a commentary track by director Brad Peyton, as well as the featurettes "San Andreas: The Real Fault Line," "Dwayne Johnson to the Rescue," and "Scoring the Quake." Each release also has Deleted Scenes, a Gag Reel, and a Stunt Reel.

San Andreas has Johnson as a rescue helicopter pilot out with his estranged wife (Carla Gugino), in order to save their daughter from the aftermath of a 9-plus earthquake in California. Alexandra Daddario, Ioan Gruffudd, Archie Panjabi and Paul Giamatti also star. This sounds like the type of movie that's made for Dolby Atmos. Read more about this action flick in Tom Fugalli's "San Andreas Review."

Mad Max: Fury Road is coming to Blu-ray on September 1, with San Andreas following on October 13. For each film, the Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack will have a list price of $44.95, with the Blu-ray Combo Pack going for $35.99.
