Velodyne Brings the Boom with DD+ and EQ-MAX Subwoofers

By Enid Burns

Velodyne is making noise at the Consumer Electronics Show this week, and they're not afraid to turn up the volume. The company is showing several new subwoofers in the Digital Drive Plus (DD+) series and EQ-MAX series, and will also have a number of in-ear vPulse headphones to demo in its suite.

The Digital Drive Plus line will have new 10-, 12-, 15- and 18-inch models. The DD+ series produces low distortion bass, using new drivers that promise twice the extension of its predecessors in the DD series. Velodyne also uses its patented high-gain servo technology and a ClassD, patented Energy Recovery System (ERS) amplifer to deliver over 3000 watts of dynamic power.

Owners can program the DD+ subwoofer by connecting it to a computer via the USB port. Settings and adjustments include eight fully parametric equalizers, which lend a smooth, even bass output. Those looking for an easier set-up process can use one-touch Auto-EQ+ to automate the subwoofer for the best settings for both system and the room.

A second line of Velodyne subwoofers, the EQ-MAX, will be introduced, boasting remote control operation and built-in processing. The processing enables users to set bass performance. A microphone helps fine-tune settings for the subwoofer, using the EQ setting on the remote control. A built-in equalizer can adjust the levels based on the room and the system, using Velodyne's Digital Signal Processing (DSP).

Velodyne isn't just about big sound in a big package. The company will also display big sound from the smaller vPulse line. These in-ear headphones feature an aluminum driver housing and 10 mm driver to produce low-distortion bass. The headphones are designed to reduce outside noise interference. Velodyne's vPulse headphones also have a pressure-relief system that boasts reduced air pressure within the ear canal and safer, more comfortable use.
