VUDU Launches Android App

By Rachel Cericola

VUDU is showing a little love (and a lot of movies) to Android. A year after releasing an iPad-specific app, VUDU has announced an app just for you Android users out there.

The Walmart-owned company just announced the app, which will allow users to stream and download over 100,000 movies and TV shows on any tablet running Android 4.0 or above. So basically, other tablet and smartphone users are out of luck right now. However, VUDU says that additional support should follow soon.

Also, in case you didn't know: When you purchase movies with an UltraViolet digital copy, you can now redeem them through VUDU for free and the service will store that item in the cloud for you. And yes, you can access that UltraViolet copy through the Android app -- as well as the iOS app, the web, and anywhere else you like to do your VUDU.

To entice users, VUDU is currently offering 10 (ten!) free movies to new users when they link or create a free UltraViolet account. That offer will expire on March 30, 2013.

VUDU is a subscription-free, video-on-demand movie service. Besides that large selection of movies and TV shows, the streaming service also offers several movies in its own HDX 1080p format, as well as many with Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound.

"The popularity of VUDU combined with Android, the world's most popular mobile operating system, provides customers with even more convenience and access to new releases, Hollywood favorites and shows," said Prasanna Ganesan, VUDU's general manager. "Since pioneering movie-on-demand, our mission at VUDU has been to give fans instant access to the greatest selection of movies and TV shows available, on as many devices as possible and with the highest streaming quality."

VUDU for Android is available now, as a free download in the Google Play store.
