VIZIO Matches Audio and Image with Super-Big Soundbars

By Rachel Cericola

We're used to seeing VIZIO's big HDTVs. Now, they're releasing a different type of product in a larger format: soundbars.

The company just announced the 42-inch 5.1 Home Theater Sound Bar with a wireless subwoofer and surrounds. Also known as model S4251w-B4, the new soundbar package is designed to complement some of today's larger HDTVs. VIZIO also has plans for 54-inch Home Theater Sound Bars for 60-inch screens and up. Both have a few interesting features -- enough to nab the product one of CNET's Best of CES awards.

First of all, this soundbar doesn't work alone. It's packaged up with a pair of wireless rear satellite speakers, as well as a wireless subwoofer, which can be placed up to 60 feet away.

The soundbar also has Bluetooth support, so users can stream sound directly from any Bluetooth-enabled device, right to the soundbar. That includes content stored on most smartphones, tablets and computers, as well as streaming audio from services like Pandora and Spotify.

Boasting upwards of 102dB of audio with less than 1 percent Total Harmonic Distortion, each soundbar package also has a feature called Display Remote. This puts a screen on the included remote control so you can check out the current input, adjust bass or enable the built-in DTS audio technologies, all without squinting across the room.

And yes, this soundbar package has built-in DTS support, as well as optical, coaxial, analog, and minijack connections.

"The new 42" and 54" 5.1 Home Theater Sound Bars are engineered to elevate the consumer home theater experience to new heights at an unparalleled value," said John Schindler, VIZIO's VP of product management. "VIZIO's new slim, modern, size-matched designs complement a range of HDTV sizes and are packed with technologies to amplify audio to match the visual experience consumers have grown to expect from their HDTVs."

VIZIO will start selling the 42-inch 5.1 Home Theater Sound Bar with the wireless subwoofer and surrounds (S4251w-B4) this spring, with an MSRP of $329.99 for the package. The company will announce more about the 54-inch models later this year.
