VIZIO Announces 65-inch LED 3D TV That Uses Inexpensive Passive Glasses

By Rachel Cericola

VIZIO just announced a new 3D TV that will change the way that you look at 3D TV -- literally. The new 65-inch Theater 3D Edge Lit Razor LED LCD HDTV is hoping to change the game, via a little something called Theater 3D technology.

Theater 3D uses circular polarized 3D technology, promising a super-sharp, flicker-free image. Unlike Active Shutter glasses, Theater 3D eyewear is lightweight, battery-free, and boasts less eyestrain. They're also compatible with the same 3D glasses used at your local cineplex, so you can say goodbye to those funky theater 3D glasses!

No, really. The 65-inch XVT series Theater 3D HDTV (model XVT3D650SV), which is the first to launch with the Theater 3D technology, will include four sets of 3D glasses inside the box. Two of those pairs are designed to accommodate prescription eyeglass wearers. That should be enough for your friends, family, neighbors, or whoever else will want to curl up in front of this big set. The Theater 3D glasses will come in multiple styles, which will add a nice personal touch when you take them out to your local theater.

"Our Theater 3D technology is a significant step forward in bringing a high-quality, immersive experience home to consumers," says Matthew McRae, VIZIO's CTO. "The bright and flicker-free images, extremely low crosstalk, and comfortable glasses allow extended viewing of content without the side-effects associated with the first generation of 3D technology. This is increasingly important as more content is released and 3D gaming goes mainstream."

The XVT3D650SV does support all 3D formats, as well as 1080p 2D. Featuring VIZIO's Smart Dimming technology, this Edge-Lit Razor LED can control its array of LEDs, which are organized in 32 zones. Other features include a 120Hz refresh rate, SRS TruSurround HD and TruVolume, five HDMI inputs, and built-in dual band 802.11n Wi-Fi.

That wireless access means you can tap into all of the content available through the VIZIO Internet Apps feature. Current VIZIO partners include Amazon Video On Demand, Facebook, Flickr, Netflix, Rhapsody, Pandora, Twitter, VUDU, and much more. All of that can be called up using VIZIO's included remote, which also features a slide-out QWERTY keypad.

Expect the XVT3D650SV to be available this month. The MSRP is $3499.99
