Well, it looks like Dolby Atmos isn't going away anytime soon. (Thank goodness!) In fact, it's just getting bigger and better titles.
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment and Legendary Pictures just announced plans to release the drama Unbroken with the 3D audio format.
Based on Laura Hillenbrand's New York Times bestseller, Unbroken is the story of Louis "Louie" Zamperini. The late Olympian and war hero (he died in July 2014, right before the film was released) spent 47 days on a raft after surviving a near-fatal plane crash during World War II, only to be captured by the Japanese navy and sent to a series of prisoner-of-war camps. Directed by Oscar winner Angelina Jolie, the film stars Jack O'Connell, Domhnall Gleeson, Garrett Hedlund and Takamasa Ishihara.
The Blu-ray will feature an English Dolby Atmos track. Dolby Atmos is a 3D sound format, which can add a new dimension to your listening experience. It actually delivers sound from above, so you can experience those birds, planes, helicopters, explosions and other content flying overhead. Just know that to experience this track, you will need an Atmos-capable receiver and the extra speakers. If you don't have that stuff yet, the track is also comaptible with the 7.1 Dolby TrueHD format.
In addition to those audio options, the Unbroken Blu-ray will include deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes interviews, and a look at the life of the real Louie Zamperini after the war. It also comes packaged with the DVD, the Digital Copy and the UltraViolet Digital Copy.
In case you're keeping score, this makes the fourth studio to offer or announce Dolby Atmos on Blu-ray. Lionsgate, Paramount and Warner Bros. have already released or announced other titles. Unbroken will be available on Blu-ray starting March 24, 2015. For more information about the film, read David Kempler's review of the theatrical release of Unbroken.
