Ultimate Ears Brings the Boom with UE Boom 2 Speaker

By Rachel Cericola

Everyone loves a good sequel. That's why Ultimate Ears is following up its UE Boom speaker with the UE Boom 2, a colorful portable that's tougher than a lot of speakers (and speaker owners) out there.

That's because the UE Boom 2 was designed to get wet, muddy and beat up. It can go to the beach, to the slopes, and to the office. The company says it is both waterproof (IPX 7) and drop-proof (from up to five feet high). Then once it gets to its destination, it can blast music out to every direction.

And it's easy to get to that magical place because Ultimate Ears has made the UE Boom 2 the size of a water bottle. It can go in your bag or your bike's water bottle holder. It can even clip onto your clothing. Also, because it has support for Bluetooth, you don't have to be weighed down by cords and music sources. Instead, it uses that tech to stream music wirelessly from any smartphone, tablet or PC.

Promising to be 25 percent louder than its predecessor, the UE Boom 2 is a 360-degree speaker with a wireless range of 100 feet. Other features include new tap controls, the option for a musical wake-up call, and a battery that promises up to 15 hours of use. Users can even double the sound by pairing the UE Boom 2 with another Ultimate Ears speaker.

Also worth mentioning is that the UE Boom 2 will be eligible for updates. Those future perks will be coming through the app, which is free for iOS and Android devices.

"Music is about making good moments great moments," said Rory Dooley, general manager of Ultimate Ears. "And by taking your music with you, those great moments are now shareable, anywhere. That's why every speaker Ultimate Ears designs is durable and adventure-proof with 360-degree sound, including UE Boom 2. We've been leading the category in a new direction, and we're breaking the mold yet again with UE Boom 2."

Available in funky color combinations that include Cherrybomb, Yeti, Phantom, GreenMachine, Tropical and BrainFreeze, the UE Boom 2 will start shipping sometime this month. Expect the speaker to be priced at $199.99.
