URC Adds Offsite Programming Option for Total Control Systems

By Rachel Cericola

There are some really cool controllers out there -- and we're not talking about the kind you snag out of the retail bargain bin. URC offers something called Total Control, which lives up to its name. This rack-mountable component can control everything in the house, including AV equipment, lighting, security, window shades, and more.

Now here comes the rub: You're going to have to call in a dealer/installer to get one. Even if you're some super programming genius, Total Control is only available via authorized dealers and installers. However, you may not have to actually see that person, thanks to a brand-new feature called Offsite Programming.

URC just announced Offsite Programming, which allows installers to access a customer's MRX-10 Advanced Network Controller from across the state or the world. Using any web connection, the pro can program or reprogram the system, change cable channel lineups, reset Favorites or make any other adjustments, all without having to drop in for a visit.

URC's MRX-10 is the central hub in the Total Control system.

Of course, you're going to have to see that installer for the initial setup process. (Don't worry; they're very nice.). Once everything is connected and in use, the Offsite Programming option should save you a few bucks on maintenance as well, since the work can be completed from anywhere with web connection. Also know that URC has installed several security measures, so your neighbor or some hacker won't be changing up your lighting scheme on a whim. Everything is password protected and even the installer can't access the system without the homeowner's approval.

"This means fewer house calls and happier customers," says Cat Toomey, director of marketing at URC." Offsite Programming saves time, gasoline and aggravation for Total Control installers and their customers alike."
