CES: Toshiba Shows New Cutting-Edge REGZA LCD HDTVs

By Chris Chiarella

At CES in Las Vegas today, the stars of the Toshiba press event were the three new lines of their high-end REGZA family of LCD TVs. First up was the XV 645 Series, in a "Bottom Deep Lagoon with Invisible Speakers" design, which essentially meant that the lower section is nicely tapered and you can't see where the sound is coming from. It brings AutoView, which automatically adjusts the picture to work with the viewing environment; along with instaport, for faster HDMI switching.

The ZV Series offers a Full Deep Lagoon bezel plus some pretty advanced technology, including ClearScan 240 with backlight scanning to reduce motion blur and provide a "240Hz effect," versus the common 60Hz or even 120Hz refresh rate we're used to. This should allow the sets to handle moving images better than traditional LCD sets.  Other bonuses include Expert Mode calibration, a USB port to plug and play JPEG photos, MP3 music and MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and DivX video, as well as Dolby Volume, a great new feature that boosts too-low and softens too-loud TV audio when changing channels or watching commercials. Toshiba's will be the first TVs to integrate Dolby Volume.

Last was a quick look at the SV670 with Infinity Flush Front Design, covered edge-to-edge with a sheet of anti-glare glass. It features Full Matrix LED Backlight with local dimming, for excellent contrast and better brightness uniformity over Edge LED. This model will be available in 46- and 55-inch screen sizes.
