Toshiba Hops on 3D TV Bandwagon with WX800 Cinema Series LED HDTV

By Chris Chiarella

Toshiba has introduced their latest line of Cinema Series TVs, highlighted by their very first to support the current home 3D TV standards. The Cinema Series is Toshiba's "best of the best," with their highest performance, most stylish design and their latest features, and the flagship is now the Toshiba WX800 3D Series LED HDTV. It stands ready to display the latest three-dimensional content: 3D movies on Blu-ray, 3D television programs, 3D videogames and so on, with the use of Toshiba's optional 3D glasses. (Toshiba also just announced their BDX3000 Blu-ray 3D Disc player to go along with the TV).

The WX800 is one of Toshiba's most sophisticated TVs ever designed. It employs LED backlighting driven by Toshiba's PixelPure 5G video engine and ClearFrame 240Hz processing to reduce blur in fast motion. The edge-lit configuration makes possible a depth of only 1.2 inches, framed with chrome and shipping with their snazzy "illusion" stand.

The new TV processes multiple 3D input formats, including MPEG4-MVC, RealD and others, with 3D Resolution+ technology to ensure a clean 3D picture. The CineSpeed LED panel contains DynaLight control for continuously optimized contrast, which yields a rated dynamic contrast ratio of 7,000,000:1 (although we all know these numbers come from the marketing departments, not the technicians).

Toshiba's Enhanced NET TV service with Yahoo! Connected TV, meanwhile, pushes a large assortment of streaming content directly to the home theater. The WX800 has built-in 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi capability, which pairs well with services such as Netflix, VUDU, YouTube and Flickr, as well as social networking options like Facebook and Twitter.

Input switching speed is enhanced on the four HDMI connections thanks to InstaPort, and HDMI-CEC support allows other CEC-enabled components to be operated using only the WX800 remote. A ColorStream component input and a PC input provide even broader connectivity.

The WX800 Cinema Series 3D LED HDTVs are shipping to dealers now, in the 55-inch (measured diagonally, 54.6 inches actual) 55WX800 and 46-inch 46WX800 screen-size models. The suggested retail prices are $3,299.99 and $2,599.99 respectively.
