Toshiba Ships BDX2500 & BDX2700 Blu-ray Players

By Rachel Cericola

Remember when Toshiba was fussy about that whole Blu-ray thing? Well, now they certainly have a comfy seat on the bandwagon. Today, the company announced details, pricing and availability for two new Blu-ray players, the BDX2500 and BDX2700.

We are smiling -- not just because they've decided to join in the Blu-ray fun, but because these players pack in a whole lot of features for only a little bit of money.

Starting under the $200 price point, these new devices include support for Wi-Fi, which comes in handy for BD Live as well as the slew of other features each unit packs in. Some of those streaming features include Blockbuster On Demand, Netflix, VUDU and Pandora web radio. Depending on the service, a subscription (and subscription fees) might be required.

Each unit also promises full HD 1080p Blu-ray playback at 24fps, as well as upconverting for standard-def DVD. Both also have slots for USB devices and an SD/SDHC card. Other features include HDMI-CEC and built-in decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio via analog 7.1 Channel audio outputs or pass-through via HDMI interface for outboard decoding.

The big difference between the two units is that the BDX2700 has built-in Wi-Fi support, while the BDX2500 needs an optional adapter (sold separately). The BDX2700 also has a slightly different design, featuring metallic-trimmed foot pedestals and an illuminated Blu-ray logo.

Of course, there's also price: The BDX2500 will retail for $179.99, while the BDX2700 has an MSRP of $249.99. Both are shipping now.
