TiVo App Comes to iPhone and iPod touch

By Rachel Cericola

Earlier this year, TiVo announced an iPad app. Now they've decided to give some love to the little guys, adding the goods for both the iPhone and iPod touch devices.

In addition to having new devices that will tap into your TiVo service, the TiVo App for iPhone is also adding support for some of the company's older DVR boxes. The TiVo App works in conjunction with the TiVo Premiere, Premiere XL, Series 3, HD and HD XL.

The TiVo App should look pretty familiar to subscribers. Using that trademark interface, this app allows users to share opinions about programming through Facebook and Twitter, as well as search across TV shows, Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, and more. It also turns that handheld into a TiVo remote, allowing subscribers to schedule and manage recordings, peek through an actor's entire career, get recommendations, and much more. Depending on your box, you may also be able to use the app to rewind and fast forward through programming.

Another new bonus: The functionality isn't limited to just TiVo subscribers -- or at least some it. The TiVo App includes a new Guest Mode, which introduces non-subscribers to the TiVo experience. Expect to browse, search and scroll through program and channel guides, all through the typical TiVo interface.

"As the maker of the world's first and only smart DVR, offering a brilliant TV experience, the TiVo App is an extension of TiVo's best-in-class user experience to iPhone and iPod touch users. By integrating these devices, the TiVo experience never leaves a users' side, allowing them a new way to access and interact with their TiVo DVR," said Jim Denney, TiVo's VP and general manager of product marketing. "The new Guest Mode feature is an important addition, as even non-TiVo users have the opportunity to navigate and interact with TiVo's hallmark service and see what they've been missing."

The TiVo App is a free download, which is now available on iTunes.
