Big Picture Big Sound

This Week on Blu-ray: The Master, Silent Hill Revelation, The Hudsucker Proxy, and more!

By Rachel Cericola

The smoke is still clearing from the Oscars set. However, if you're still trying to burn your way through this year's nominees, we have another Blu-ray to add to your collection.

This week, The Master comes to Blu-ray. All three of the film's leads received Oscar nominations this year, even though the film didn't walk away with any statues. The rumor is that the subject was too hot for some to handle -- and a little too close to Scientology.

If you're not interested in that subject matter (and a trio of stellar performances), there are plenty of other options this week. A horror franchise gets another entry, Barbie becomes a pretty ballerina, and Gerard Butler continues to drown his career with another big-budget flop.

Did we miss one of your favorites for the week? Have something to say about one of this week's new releases? Sound off in the comments below. Otherwise, all of these titles are out as of February 26, 2013, except where noted. Enjoy!

Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix were both nominated for Oscars for Anchor Bay's "The Master."

The Master

Here's your chance to catch this underrated Oscar nominee. Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams all received nods for their respective roles in Paul Thomas Anderson's (There Will Be Blood) controversial drama. Phoenix plays a Navy vet who can't seem to adjust to home life -- until he latches on to Lancaster Dodd (Hoffman) and a religious movement known as "The Cause."

Despite its limited release, Anchor Bay is giving this one a nice 2-disc set. It has a 1.85:1 image, a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track, a standard-def DVD and a Digital Copy of the film. Most of the extras are short, with outtakes, trailers and teasers, and one behind-the-scenes short. The gem of the lot, however, is "Let There Be Light," John Huston's 1946 doc about WWII vets. The Hudsucker Proxy

The Coen Brothers' stellar comedy is now available on Blu-ray -- you know, for kids! Actually, that's not the case at all. This one is for the adults and it's hilarious, with Tim Robbins as a mailroom boob who's promoted to CEO as part of an upper-management plot to keep control of the company's stock. Jennifer Jason Leigh, Paul Newman, John Mahoney, Charles Durning and John Goodman also star.

This one has been a long-time coming. However, Warner Bros. is only giving the Coens' classic one measley disc. Expect it to include a 1.85:1 image and a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track. At last peek, however, Warner Bros. had yet to announce any extras for the release. [Warner Bros.]

Chasing Mavericks

The true tale of late surfer Jay Moriarty sounds like an interesting one. Then, they had to go and add Gerard Butler into the mix. He plays surfing legend Frosty Hesson, who takes on Moriarty (played by newcomer Jonny Weston) as his pet project. Elisabeth Shue also stars.

Warner Bros. is hoping you'll be able to hang the whole 115-minute runtime on this one. The film has some pretty stellar ocean imagery, with a 1.85:1 aspect ratio and a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. Other features include an audio commentary, deleted scenes and the film's original theatrical trailer. [Fox]

SilentHillRevelation.jpg
Adelaide Clemens stars in "Silent Hill: Revelation," a sequel to the 2006 horror film, "Silent Hill."

Silent Hill: Revelation 3D

The horror continues -- literally. The sequel to the wildly successful 2006 film Silent Hill introduces us to Heather Mason (Adelaide Clemens), from the PS2 game Silent Hill 3. After discovering that things are not as they seem, Heather goes in search of her true identity -- and Silent Hill. Apparently, she didn't see the original film.

Universal is giving this scary sequel a 3-disc set, which includes a 3D Blu-ray, a 2D Blu-ray, a standard-def DVD and an UltraViolet Digital Copy. Those are the main perks here, though. Otherwise, the set just has the theatrical trailer and a 3-minute short titled, "A look inside Silent Hill: Revelation."

Barbie in The Pink Shoes

Toy icon Barbie probably has a whole dream house filled with shoes. This direct-to-video release is about the pink ones, which just so happen to be sparkly ballet shoes. Once she puts on that perfect pair, she'll need to dance in order to defeat an evil Snow Queen and make all of her dreams come true.

This direct-to-video release gets a Blu-ray that's as sparkly as Barbie herself. It has a 1.85:1 image, a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track, and a selection of extras geared at the film's target audience. Those include outtakes, a pair of music videos, and a short about life inside the dreamhouse. [Universal]
