The Dark Knight: Now Playing on Facebook

By Rachel Cericola

As if you don't spend enough time on Facebook, now comes word that the social media website has started streaming movies.

On Tuesday, Warner Bros. put up The Dark Knight as Facebook's first official movie offering. If you are one of the site's 600 million (give or take) subscribers, you can stream Christopher Nolan's 2008 blockbuster by logging into your account and clicking on the official Batman: The Dark Knight Facebook page. From there, click on Watch in the left-hand menu.

Of course, Warner isn't just giving away its biggest Batman movie to date. The movie will cost you 30 Facebook credits, which is about $3. That fee will snag you the rental for 48 hours, as well as the right to post status updates and comments directly to Facebook, all during the movie.

Facebook credits can be earned through special offers or you can buy credits using PayPal, credit cards, or your mobile phone.

"Facebook has become a daily destination for hundreds of millions of people," said Thomas Gewecke, president of Warner Bros. Digital Distribution (via GeekTyrant). "Making our films available through Facebook is a natural extension of our digital distribution efforts. It gives consumers a simple, convenient way to access and enjoy our films through the world's largest social network."

Users have the option to watch the movie in full screen, as well as pause the movie, and resume playing upon logging back into Facebook. However, Facebook doesn't have the same big-screen integration as Netflix, Amazon, or other streaming services, so whether there will be any real competition remains to be seen. For now, The Dark Knight is the only movie being streamed on Facebook. Additional titles are expected to be available over the coming months.
