Technics High Resolution Audio Gear Comes to the U.S. in March

By Chris Boylan

In case you missed it, Panasonic re-launched the Technics brand at the IFA show in Berlin last fall. At CES, the Technics gang was back to announce U.S. availability for their two high resolution audio-capable systems. The Technics Reference Class R1 Series includes a networked high-resolution audio player/control amp, a power amplifier and a pair of large tower speakers. The Premium-Class C700 Series includes a networked high-res audio player, an integrated amp and a pair of smaller mini-monitor speakers with coaxial drivers. There is also an optional CD player for the C700 series.

I stopped by the Technics suite at the Venetian for a meeting with company executives as well as an extensive listening session. While they didn't have any Daft Punk on hand (boo!), they had some great-sounding high resolution jazz tracks with substantial live drumming and excellent dynamics. As a former semi-professional drummer, I know what live drums are supposed to sound like, and these two systems did a fantastic job reproducing the dynamics, bass extension and fine treble details of live drums and cymbals. Piano was also reproduced nicely with the warmth and presence of a real instrument floating in front of me.

In terms of differences, the R1 Series system produced an overall larger soundstage with more power, more impact and excellent bass extension while the smaller C700 system was more like listening to music in a smaller hall with an intimate soundstage and pinpoint imaging. But even the smaller system had tight, tuneful bass and excellent microdynamics.

Both systems are expected to be available in the U.S. in March of this year. System components are available together or ala carte.  Exact pricing has not yet been announced but Technics reps did confirm ballpark pricing for the two systems (included below).

Now if only Technics would release a new turntable (preferably one that automatically rips vinyl records to high res audio files), then we'd be rocking! Until then, I guess this great-sounding, retro-cool high-res audio gear will have to do.
