Tablo OTA HDTV DVR Now Available on Amazon Fire TV and Android TV, New ROKU Channel Launched

By Rachel Cericola

A lot of people are opting for streaming services over expensive pay TV. However, that won't get you the American Idol results show as it happens, as well as things like local news and sports. Now, you may be able to have it all, since Nuvyyo is adding over-the-air (OTA) programming into two popular media streaming platforms.

The company just announced public availability of the Tablo app on the Amazon Fire TV and Android TV streaming set-top-boxes (such as the Asus Nexus Player). This means that Tablo users can access live and recorded OTA content right on the big screen, through one of those boxes.

Of course, you'll also need the Tablo DVR itself, which is a network-attached live TV tuner and digital video recorder and  that comes in both 2-tuner and 4-tuner versions. Tablo uses an indoor or outdoor antenna to pick up your local digital TV stations. The nice thing about the Tablo DVR is that it doesn't take up precious living room space and does not need to be connected directly to your TV. Instead, the Tablo DVR connects to your home network either via WiFi or network cable. You control recording and playback of shows on your local broadcast channels via the Tablo app on a PC, phone, tablet or streaming media box (Roku, Amazon Fire TV or Android TV).

Other perks of the Tablo app include access to the Tablo settings screen and the "Tablo Connect" feature. The latter means that once the Tablo is on your home network, you'll be able to access it, as well as live TV and recordings from virtually anywhere in the world, as long as you have an internet connection.

If you have a Roku box, there's a bit of new love from Tablo as well. Nuvyyo has just redesigned the Tablo Roku channel "to have the same beautiful Netflix-style look and feel as Tablo's mobile and web apps." The live preview of this newly enhanced app is currently available for download as a private Roku channel and also includes a new live TV grid guide.

During the initial launch of the live preview, Roku users will be able to watch, pause and rewind live TV; browse and set recordings over a 24-hour period using the grid guide; and browse and watch recordings. In the coming months, the company plans to add the option to view scheduled recordings and browse and set recordings over a 14-day period.

"Over the last year, we've built a solid base of Tablo apps for mobile devices and PCs, so we felt 2015 was the time to expand our focus to the big-screen experience," said Grant Hall, CEO at Nuvyyo. "As cord cutting accelerates and consumers turn to OTA TV, these new apps will bring the same beautiful Tablo user interface to living rooms across North America."

Links to all Tablo apps are available on the Tablo website.
