Spotify Radio Launches, Delivers Free Access for iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch

By Rachel Cericola

Spotify users know that if you want to play, you'll need to pay -- at least when it comes to the mobile service. Now, the company is going to be giving away some freebies for when you're on the go, via the Spotify iOS app.

Announced today, the upgrade will allow free users to access Spotify on the iPhone, iPad and/or iPod touch. However, that access will come in the form of Spotify Radio, which can deliver unlimited music, all while on the move.

The new upgrade will allow users to listen, discover, save and share music from a catalog of more than 16 million songs.

Similar to Pandora, the new radio feature will invite users to build an unlimited number of streaming radio stations from a single song, playlist, album or artist. Users can then listen to each station as long as they like, and even save songs, so they can be retrieved later.

If you think one of your friends has a similar musical taste, you can check out their playlists and create radio stations based on those selections. That said, if you're not even sure what you like, Spotify has a recommendation engine, which taps into what millions of other Spotify listeners like.

"Our focus has always been on creating an amazing user experience," said Charlie Hellman, VP, Product at Spotify. "The radio feature we've added to our iPhone and iPad apps gives users the ability to discover, listen and save what they like on the go -- all within one app -- for free."

Spotify's Premium users can also tap into Spotify Radio, for an ad-free listening experience. That privilege will cost you $9.99 per month. If you want a free account, expect to hear ads from current Spotify advertisers mixed in with the music.

The Spotify Radio feature is available now to Premium users both in and outside of the United States. The free option, however, is currently a U.S. exclusive.
