Sony and Simon Cowell Team up on X Headphones

By Rachel Cericola

The second season of the U.S. version of The X Factor will kick off later this week -- and it looks like it's getting some fanfare from the electronics world as well. Sony just announced plans to team up with Syco Entertainment on X Headphones.

In case you don't recognize the name, Syco Entertainment is actually a global joint venture between Simon Cowell and Sony Music Entertainment. Aha!

Each pair of X Headphones boasts noise isolation, exceptional bass response, 50mm drivers, and pressure-relieving memory foam ear pads. Other features include aluminum headbands, swivel mechanisms and end caps, as well as a folding style, detachable cord and a carrying case for easy travel.

Apple users will also appreciate the 3-button control on the cord, which provides microphone, track, and volume control functionality to users with an iPod, iPhone or iPad.

Designed for the true music lover (and presumably an X Factor fan), X Headphones will probably go head-to-head with many of the other celebrity-backed headphones on the market. However, the product's inspiration will also be its toughest critic.

"I chose to make a set of headphones with Sony because I simply wanted something better than what is in the market today," said Cowell. "I've tried all of them, literally every single one. Sony and I set out to create the best headphone in the world. We are absolutely blown away by these. With the X headphones, it's like being in the recording studio when the records are made. The sound is that clear."

X Headphones will be available at Sony Stores online starting September 10, one day before The X Factor premieres on Fox. (Expect to see the product pop up on the show this season as well.) The headphones will then show up in Sony Stores on September 15 and trickle down to other retailers by the end of the month. Expect X Headphones to be listed with an MSRP of $299.
