Sony VPL-HW30ES Projector Does 3D Home Theater for Under $4K

By Rachel Cericola

Sony is making big-screen 3D slightly more attainable. We're not talking about TVs. The newly announced VPL-HW30ES 3D home theater front projector is promising big images -- and ones that the company says are nearly three times as bright as Sony's current 3D home projector.

The big hook on this projector is that it will do both 2D and 3D for just $3699.99. While that's not exactly chump change, it does drop the price drastically since the debut of the VPL-VW90ES 3D projector, which has an MSRP of $9999.99.

As part of Sony's high-end "Elevated Standards" (ES) line, the VPL-HW30ES doesn't skimp on features, adding in Sony's latest panel technology and dynamic lamp control system. New lamp technology boasts better, brighter images, and also promises to reduce crosstalk.

Other VPL-HW30ES features include the company's SXRD (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) technology, a 240Hz frame rate, a dynamic contrast of up to 70,000:1, 1,300 lumens of brightness, and 2D-to-3D conversion. The VPL-HW30ES also has Motionflow with Dark Frame Insertion and Mosquito and Block Noise reduction, as well as 24p True Cinema capabilities and two-way RS-232 and an IR input for integration with home control systems.

The VPL-HW30ES projector will be available via authorized A/V specialists and custom installers.

The VPL-HW30ES supports 3D formats including frame packing, side-by-side, and top and bottom. However, to do the 3D, you will need a few add-ons. The 2.1-ounce TDG-PJ1 active shutter 3D glasses ($129.99 per pair) and the TMR-PJ1 3D transmitter ($79.99) are also new, and essential to the 3D experience.

"The VPL-HW30ES is part of Sony's strategy to expand 3D for home front projectors," said Charles Speidel, Sony's VP of the Home Audio and Video division. "This uses the same SXRD cinematic display technology to enable high resolution, high contrast and faster refresh rates, delivering incredible pictures and full high definition on a big screen, even in 3D. Whether watching movies, sports or playing video games, this projector, offers consumer the ultimate theater experience in their living room."

Sony's TDG-PJ1 active 3D glasses are 2.1 ounces, and offer up to 30 hours of use on a 30-minute charge.

Sony is planning to make the VPL-HW30ES projector available through A/V specialists and custom installers sometime in July. It will also be available as the VPL-HW30AES bundle, which includes the projector, two pairs of 3D glasses, and the transmitter.
