Sony Puts Big Sound into Small NFC Bluetooth Speakers

By Rachel Cericola

Sony Electronics is taking sound on the road -- and we're not talking to Vegas for this week's 2013 International CES. The company just introduced four portable Bluetooth speakers, with each packing NFC (Near Field Communication) technology.

NFC is becoming a new buzzword, allowing users to just tap on a compatible smartphone or tablet for instant streaming via Bluetooth. Each speaker works with the iPad and iPhone, as well as Android smartphones and tablets with Bluetooth -- whether they have NFC support or not.

Sony's X-Series NFC-equipped speakers for 2013 are the SRS-BTX500 and the SRS-BTX300, Both have AptX and AAC Bluetooth codecs, boasting high-quality, wireless streaming. The SRS-BTX500 is being billed as the premium model, with extra sound goodies from Sony. That includes a built-in subwoofer and Sony's DMC technology, which packs in a combination of dual passive radiators, magnetic fluid speakers and clear phase digital signal processing.

These new speakers also look as good as they sound, with each getting a smooth-shaped back and brushed aluminum accents. Each model comes packing a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The SRS-BTX300 promises 8 hours of playback, with the SRS-BTX500 clocking in at 6 hours. Other features include speakerphone options, a USB charging port and a carrying case.

Sony is also releasing two other portable wireless speakers, the SRS-BTV5 and the SRS-BTM8. Both offer hands-free calling and the NFC technology. The SRS-BTV5 also has Sony's 360-degree Circle Sound audio diffusion technology and a rechargeable battery for 5 hours of playback. The SRS-BTM8 speaker is more for all-day (and night) listening, promising up to 20 hours of wireless playback.

"Sony's making the Bluetooth user experience even more convenient with the introduction of NFC technology in all of our portable wireless speakers," said Andrew Sivori, VP of Sony's personal audio division. "We're also including hands-free speakerphone functionality across the line, meeting the demands of today's smartphone users."

Sony will start selling all of the new portable wireless NFC speakers this March. The SRS-BTX500 will come in black for $299, with the SRS-BTX300 offering black and white options for $199. The SRS-BTM8 will also offer just a black model for $99. And finally, the SRS-BTV5 will be available in black, white or pink with an MSRP of $69.
