Sony Prices Entry-Level VPL-VW600ES 4K Projector at $14,999

By Rachel Cericola

We've been waiting to see when more companies were going to release Ultra HD 4K projectors. Well Sony is opening the floodgates. The company announced two new home theater projectors today at the CEDIA Expo in Denver, Colorado. The VPL-VW600ESĀ 4K Home Theater Projector is Sony's "entry-level" option, with an MSRP of $14,999.99.

Like some of Sony's higher-end models, the VPL-VW600ES can deliver a Full Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI)-based 4096-by-2160 resolution. Despite the compact appearance, this model can actually do a 4K native resolution at 60 frames per second. Our own editor Chris Boylan saw this being demonstrated on the CEDIA show floor, and said that the 60fps was nothing short of stunning.

Some of the new features include front-exhaust, a 2.06x powered zoom lens, and a wide lens shift range. The VPL-VW600ES also has a built-in RF transmitter for displaying 3D content. It just needs to be paired up with the same glasses used with Sony's 3D Bravia televisions.

The projector also boasts 1700 ANSI lumens of brightness and a 200,000:1 contrast ratio. Other features include the TRILUMINOS display for color, an enhanced optical engine design, and auto valibration and manual color correction features. It also has the Reality Creation engine for 4K upscaling of high-definition 1080p content (including 3D), as well as enhancing Sony's own "Mastered in 4K" Blu-ray Discs.

Also worth mentioning is how the VPL-VW600ES is optimized to work with Sony's Video Unlimited 4K service, a feature that's currently only available in the U.S. The video download service recently launched with over 70 full-length native 4K Ultra HD feature films and TV shows, all of which are available for rent or purchase.

"Sony knows from our experience in the custom install channel that not every screening room will be part of a new construction, but we also know that home projector enthusiasts are eager to bring 4K entertainment home," said Andre Floyd, manager in Sony Electronics' Home Front Projector Group. "The innovative design and proven technology in the VPL-VW600ES allows us, with our Custom Install Solutions channel partners, to deliver the cinema experience to more homes than ever before."

Sony will start selling the VPL-VW600ES in November. It can also be purchased as a package that includes the Sony FMP-X1 4K Ultra HD Media Player and Sony's Xperia Z Tablet, all for $15,999.99.
