Sony Pictures Hops on the Dolby Atmos Train with 4K Remaster of Bram Stoker's Dracula

By Rachel Cericola

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE), welcome to the Dolby Atmos family!

The studio just announced its very first Atmos-enabled Blu-ray, Bram Stoker's Dracula. The Blu-ray will be released on October 6, 2015.

Sony is now the sixth major studio to come on board with Dolby Atmos on Blu-ray. Paramount, Universal, Warner Bros, Lionsgate and HBO are the other five. (For a peek at current Dolby Atmos Blu-ray releases, check out our master list.)

Dolby Atmos means that you'll actually be able to feel (and hear) the Transylvanian prince (played by Gary Oldman) swooping in from overhead. The 1992 film also stars Winona Ryder as Dracula's love interest.

To experience Dolby Atmos, you will need a Dolby Atmos-capable receiver, as well as additional speakers. If you don't have an Atmos setup, the Blu-ray is Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible. Besides the audio, the film also received an all-new 4K restoration for this release.

The new Blu-ray even has new special features, such as a "rare" 1993 commentary track with Director Francis Ford Coppola, his son (and Second Unit/Visual Effects Director) Roman Coppola, and Makeup Supervisor Greg Cannom. The father/son team also participated in new featurettes, including "Reflections in Blood: Francis Ford Coppola and Bram Stoker's Dracula" and "Practical Magicians: A Collaboration Between Father and Son." Other extras include deleted scenes, four legacy featurettes, and an audio commentary and film introduction by the director.

Bram Stoker's Dracula will be available as a stand-alone Blu-ray and as the first entry in SPHE's newly announced Supreme Cinema Series.

The Supreme Cinema Series is a new line of limited-edition releases. SPHE is giving the Bram Stoker's Dracula Supreme Cinema Series edition the same Blu-ray, but it comes with a limited-edition "Clear Case" and a 24-page booklet with pictures and tidbits about the movie. It also has new writings by director Francis Ford Coppola.

Bram Stoker's Dracula will be available on Blu-ray and as a Super Cinema Series Blu-ray starting October 6, 2015. Both are available for pre-order now.
