Sony Makes a Splash with Waterproof, Wire-Free Walkman Sports MP3 Player

By Rachel Cericola

The first Walkman was made available to the public back in 1979. Since then, we've seen a ton of manfacturers muscle in on the portable audio market. Where's the Walkman to go? Um, how about underwater?

Sony Electronics just announced the Walkman Sports MP3 Player, which is a waterproof, all-in-one digital music player. Also known as the NWZ-W270, this portable player can hit the gym, head into the great outdoors, and go underwater in the pool.

Yes, it has a waterproof design, which means it can repel everything from your stinky sweat to a good game of Marco Polo.

Compatible with files from iTunes, Windows Media Player and Windows Explorer, the new Walkman has easy controls, 4GB of on-board memory and up to eight hours of playback on a full charge. It also has a quick-charge option, which can deliver up to 60 minutes of playback after just three minutes of charging.

Other features include a new tension band for a supportive fit and small, medium and large earpieces.

"For many people, music is a vital component to enable a vigorous workout," said Andrew Sivori, vice president of Sony's personal audio division. "Now, everyone from casual fitness enthusiasts to hard-core triathletes can enjoy their favorite music while they train or compete. Whether on land or in the water, the new Walkman Sports MP3 Player is the perfect workout accessory."

Sony will start selling the Walkman Sports MP3 Player this March. It will be available in blue, pink, white, and black, with an MSRP of $99.99.
