Sony Licenses Dolby's High Dynamic Range (HDR) Image Display Technology for HDTV

By Rachel Cericola

Dolby Laboratories is well known for its audio advancements. Now they are making inroads into image processing, but still working mostly "behind the scenes" -- or at least behind the image.

Today, the company announced that it will license its local dimming high dynamic range (HDR) imaging technology patents to Sony. The technology will then be used on select BRAVIA LCD televisions, which feature LED backlight technology.

Dolby's high-tech touch boasts better, brighter images than what we've seen on fluorescent tube backlit LCDs and even on most LED-lit LCD TVs. As an added bonus, LED technology offers lower overall power consumption than other HDTV technologies.

"Dolby is committed to delivering the best possible entertainment experience, whether that means immersing surround sound to enhance audio, or LED local dimming LCDs that consume less power to display very bright, high contrast images," said Ramzi Haidamus, Dolby's executive VP of sales and marketing. "Dolby continues to create innovative imaging solutions that enable partners to provide compelling entertainment experiences."

Dolby has actually been involved with imaging for quite some time. The company first started to broaden its horizons with 2005's Dolby Digital Cinema. Since then, the company has launched Dolby 3D, Dolby Professional Reference Monitor, an open specification for 3D broadcast, and more recently, the HDR technology.
