Big Picture Big Sound

Sony Debuts 84-inch XBR-84X900 4K TV

By Rachel Cericola

Just a few days ago, LG was talking up next month's CEDIA Expo and the company's plans to show off its 84-inch 4K LED TV to the tradeshow's masses. Now, Sony is grabbing some of that same spotlight, debuting its first 4K TV, the 84-inch XBR-84X900.

The upcoming set will include a 4K (3840 x 2160) LCD panel, which can deliver four times the resolution of a full 1080p HDTV. It will also have the 4K X-Reality PRO picture engine, which promises clear, crisp images regardless of the content source. Also, for truly in-your-face images, Sony is packing passive 3D technology into this set, along with lightweight glasses for 3D viewing out of the box -- er, truck.

However, this 84-incher doesn't just have a pretty picture. Sony says that it can create some wall-shaking sound via the included 10 Unit Live Speaker system. This little perk boasts virtual 5.1 surround sound and detachable side speakers.

Other features on this 84-incher will include built-in WiFi and the Sony Entertainment Network suite of services. The latter can deliver on-screen access to options like Music Unlimited, Video Unlimited, Netflix, Pandora, Yahoo! Broadcast Interactivity, and more. The set will also be compatible with Sony's Media Remote app, so viewers can control the TV experience via a tablet or smartphone.

"From Trinitron to HD, 3D and now 4K, Sony has led the way, innovating TV since 1968. This new model redefines what consumers should expect from their television's performance," said Brian Siegel, vice president of Sony Electronics' TV Group. "Our professional division continues to see the migration toward 4K content creation with major film and broadcast productions. Armed with this knowledge and expertise, only Sony continues to push the television experience with innovation and immersive products."

Although the company has yet to say anything about the cost of the set, it shouldn't be a secret for very long. Sony is planning to have the XBR-84X900 in Sony Stores and select retail locations in North America later this year.
